Search Engine Optimisation or Search Engine Optimization as our US counterparts like to call it, is another new name for an old game. Although I've been marketing and promoting websites in the UK since 1996 ( nearly a decade ), I've been involved in marketing since the 1970's.

I often reflect upon traditional ink-on-paper marketing then focus on website marketing and genuinely believe that a lot of people have lost the plot! At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man, I'm convinced that the internet marketing industry is over-run by self appointed internet marketing experts trying to re-invent the wheel.

Google, wittingly or otherwise invented SEO, search engine optimisation and it was a very clever move. It got many of us spending untold time in chatrooms and website marketing forums sweating and weeping over Google's PageRank. Even the term Search Engine Optimisation ( optimization !! ) is a little misleading because we don't optimise search engines, we optimise websites for search engines.

Way back in the old days (1996 ) it was search engine placement and search engine submissions, now it seems to be search engine manipulation. There are far too many 'Search Engine Experts' spending time devising way to manipulate search engines such as Google and trying to flood the market withn these scams. There's two real ways of successfully promoting your website, one is by buying into sponsored links and the other is through honest organic promotions, I lean towards the latter.
