SEO UK. By Peter Yexley - What is search engine optimisation? Search Engine Optimisation or Search Engine Optimization as our US counterparts like to call it, is as I have said on another page, another new name for an old game. Google, wittingly or otherwise invented today's style of SEO, search engine optimisation and it was a very clever move. It got many of us spending untold time in chatrooms and website marketing forums sweating and weeping over Google's PageRank. Even the term Search Engine Optimisation ( optimization !! ) is a little misleading because we don't optimise search engines, we optimise websites for search engines. Way back in the old days (1996 ) it was search engine placement and search engine submissions now it seems to be search engine manipulation. I am a great believer in 'organic' searches and feel that whilst Pay Per Click and its various guises, good quality website optimisation is the real way forward. Where do we draw the line in terms of search engine optimisation, do we hone and polish our website to suit Google? the answer is " NO ", if our website is another marketing harm and looks for real people to spend real money, then our number one priority is ensuring our website is 'consumer' friendly. We can argue that if we don't optimise our website to suit Google, then it won't get listed high enough for real people with real money to find it - this is true, but it is also Google's ethos to index sites that are consumer friendly, so the foundations are based on what the consumer wants and the decoration can be based upon Google's criteria ... which changes from time to time!
